Know Your Rights: Protect Yourself & Your Community

At Anti-Displacement PDX Coalition, we believe that everyone—regardless of immigration status—deserves safe and stable housing, workplaces, schools, places of worship and more. Undocumented immigrants face unique challenges, but you have rights. This page provides important information to help you protect yourself, your family, and your home.

Your Rights as an Undocumented Immigrant

  • You have the RIGHT to remain silent.

If approached by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) or law enforcement, you do not have to answer questions about your immigration status.

You can say: "I am exercising my right to remain silent."

Avoid giving false information or signing anything without speaking to a lawyer.

  • You have the RIGHT to refuse a search.

ICE agents cannot enter your home without a signed warrant from a judge.

If they knock, ask them to slide the warrant under the door or show it through a window.

If they do not have a valid warrant, do not open the door.

  • You have the RIGHT to an attorney.

If you are detained, you have the right to speak to a lawyer.

You do not have to sign anything before consulting legal support.

If you cannot afford a lawyer, there are organizations that provide free or low-cost legal aid (see resources below).

  • You have housing RIGHTS!

Landlords cannot ask about your immigration status.

It is illegal for landlords to threaten eviction or report you to ICE because of your status.

If you are facing eviction or housing discrimination, you can get legal help.

  • What to do if YOU encounter ICE

Stay calm and do not run.

Do not open your door unless they have a signed warrant.

Do not sign anything without a lawyer.

Document everything. If possible, take notes or ask someone to record the interaction.

Call a trusted person or legal support organization immediately.
